Commentary: Hebrews

The Concordia Commentary series is known to be one of the most reliable, Biblically sound commentaries today. Book: Commitment to Faith: John's Gospel of Jesus

In John’s Gospel we come to realise that the author and apostle understands Jesus to be the eternal presence of God come in flesh and walking among us. 
His message points us to an eternal destiny planned for mankind to be in God’s presence. The puzzle of 'who is this Jesus?' becomes clear as we are introduced to the one who has come from heaven to open heaven’s door to us. Jesus confronts our limited temporal existence. His agenda seen in his dying for us on the cross with the resurrection that followed, gives us a greater, broader, and more meaningful perspective on life than the next political election, the state of our economy, the latest new gadget, and the next moralistic movement. 
We need to realize that our existence will cease! What then? When this truth is finally seen for what it is, then we are left with a depressive hopelessness. 
The question to ask is this: "Is this all there is to life?" To which Jesus speaks his message of hope that there is far more to come, and it begins now. As Jesus was lifted up in fulfilment of God's agenda for our salvation, so we are lifted up into his eternal presence. This divine connection changes everything, beginning for our 'here-and-now' as well as for ‘what is yet to come’.

Commentary Series: Feasting on the Word

Feasting on the Word products are quickly becoming the go-to resource for not only preachers, but also educators, worship planners, and individuals. Offering focused resources for sermon and worship preparation, education, and personal devotion, most of the resources utilize the biblical texts assigned by the Revised Common Lectionary, while providing an equally accessible resource for nonlectionary readers through the use of extensive Scripture indexes.
After the success of the lectionary-based preaching series, the need for this type of approach to other aspects of church leadership, education, and planning was understood. This began the endeavor to create the ecumenical, downloadable, and lectionary-based curriculum, which incorporates the Feasting on the Word commentary style each week to explore one of the lectionary passages in ways suitable for participants of all ages. Church educators immediately fell in love with the ability of the curriculum to tie-in to worship and for the same Scripture passages to be studied by all ages in the church.
To further assist with worship preparation, the Feasting on the Word Worship Companion series was put into place. Including a multitude of poetic prayers and responsive readings for all parts of worship, the volumes also include questions for reflection and household prayers for morning and evening. The Daily Feast devotionals are another resource in the Feasting on the Word line put in place to not only provide sermon and worship planning tools for preachers and other worship leaders, but also time for devotion for these leaders and all of those in the church. In these devotionals, each day of the week contains Scripture passages for the coming Sunday from the Revised Common Lectionary, excerpts from the commentaries for reflection, a response, and a prayer.
Moving beyond lectionary-based Scripture, Feasting on the Gospels helps to round out the original commentary series for all preachers. In order to explore all four Gospels in their entirety, this offshoot of the original commentary series continues to use the four-perspective track, providing completely new essays on the exegetical, theological, homiletical, and pastoral challenges of the text. Not only does Feasting on the Gospels provide supplementary material to lectionary preachers, but it also succeeds in providing a resource for nonlectionary preachers and worship leaders. Feasting on the Word - resources for sermon and education preparation

Feasting on the Word offers pastors and church educators focused resources for sermon preparation and education. All resources in the Feasting on the Word collection utilize the biblical texts assigned by the Revised Common Lectionary, and for each text, readers will find brief essays on the exegetical, theological, homiletical, and pastoral challenges of the text. The two main collections under Feasting on the Word are the lectionary commentary series Feasting on the Word: Preaching the Revised Common Lectionary and the new Feasting on the Word Curriculum: Teaching the Revised common Lectionary.
The editors of these resources are from a wide variety of disciplines and religious traditions. These authors teach in colleges and seminaries. They lead congregations by preaching or teaching. They write scholarly books as well as columns for newspapers and journals. They oversee denominations. In all of these capacities and more, they serve God's Word, joining in the ongoing challenge of bringing that Word to life.

THE REVISED COMMON LECTIONARY SERIES
Feasting on the Word follows the Revised Common Lectionary (RCL) as developed by the Consultation on Common Texts, an ecumenical consultation of liturgical scholars and denominational representatives from the United States and Canada. The RCL lists a collection of readings from Scripture to be used during worship in a schedule that follows the seasons of the church year. In addition, it provides for a uniform set of readings to be used across denominations or other church bodies.
The RCL includes a reading from the Old Testament, a Psalm response to that reading, a Gospel, and an Epistle for each preaching occasion of the year. It is presented in a three-year cycle, with each year centered around one of the Synoptic Gospels. Year A is the year of Matthew, Year B is the year of Mark, and Year C is the year of Luke. John is read each year, especially during Advent, Lent, and Easter.
The RCL offers two tracks of Old Testament texts for the Season after Pentecost or Ordinary Time: a semi-continuous track, which moves through stories and characters in the Old Testament, and a complementary track, which ties the Old Testament texts to the theme of the Gospel texts for that day. Some denominational traditions favor one track over the other. For instance, Presbyterians and Methodists generally follow the semi-continuous track, while Lutherans and Episcopalians typically follow the complementary track. FEASTING COMMENTARY SERIES
With this new lectionary commentary series, Westminster John Knox Press offers the most extensive resource for preaching on the market today. The twelve volumes of the series covers all of the Sundays in the three-year lectionary cycle, along with moveable occasions such as Christmas Day, Epiphany, Holy Week, and All Saints' Day.
For each lectionary text, preachers will find four brief essays-one each on the exegetical, theological, pastoral, and homiletical challenges of the text. They might focus on the Gospel text, for instance, by reading all four essays provided for that text, or they might explore connections between the Hebrew Bible, Psalm, Gospel, and Epistle texts by reading the theological essays for each one.
Each lectionary year consists of four volumes, one for the Advent and Christmas season, one for Lent and Easter, and one for each half of Ordinary Time.

CURRICULUM 
The new Feasting on the Word Curriculum: Teaching the Revised Common Lectionary is an ecumenical, downloadable resource that incorporates the uniqueness of the award-winning Feasting on the Word commentaries. This innovative resource incorporates the Feasting on the Word commentary style to explore one of the lectionary passages in ways suitable for all participants. Each age level provides comprehensive, accessible biblical background for teachers from four perspectives.
This curriculum begins with a solid scriptural and theological base for leaders and invites leaders and learners deeper into the rhythm of the church year. It utilizes a common Bible passage for all learners, making it easy for families to learn and live out their faith together.
The curriculum is available as a Total Church Plan or as Individual Age Levels, in both 9 and 12 month formats and per season.
