Conference: Craft of preaching

Craft of preaching - 4th to 5th October 2016
Do you ever wonder what’s behind the scenes of some of the sermons you hear at big preaching conferences with famous preachers?  Have you always wanted a practical preaching conference where you can learn some new methods for constructing a sermon and honing your homiletical skills?
Three top teachers of preachers will preach a sermon and then tell you how they got there, with plenty of time for Q&A.
Workshops will provide hands-on experience with practitioners dedicated to homiletical issues.
Bring your specific examples and questions to ask.
Foundational, collegial and encouraging, this conference is a unique opportunity to tend the craft of your preaching among peers old and new.

Speakers
Tom Long, Bandy Professor Emeritus of Preaching, Candler School of Theology
Anna Carter Florence, Peter Marshall Associate Professor of Preaching, Columbia Theological Seminary
Karoline Lewis, Associate Professor of Biblical Preaching and The Marbury E. Anderson Chair of Biblical Preaching, Luther Seminary (pre-conference class)

Conference: Return to Wittenberg

Return to Wittenberg Conference
26-29 July 2016
Wisconsin Lutheran College, Milwaukee

About the conference
What is the point of going to Church? Can’t I praise and thank God from anywhere – like in the comfort of my own home? I already believe in God. I’m basically a good person. Isn’t that enough?
R2W’s first annual conference will deal with these and other questions that Christian millennials struggle with by addressing the all-encompassing question posed by the Small Catechism: “What Does This Mean?”
We believe the answer to this question can be found in the Catechism’s Six Chief Parts – 1) the Ten Commandments, 2) the Creed, 3) the Lord’s Prayer, 4) Holy Baptism, 5) Confession, and 6) Holy Communion – which are the essence of the entire Christian faith. Our conference will use the Parts as an outline, around which all our worship, discussions, and presentations will be based.
Through the Six Chief Parts, we will discover that the meaning of all true Christian life and worship is found in Christ Jesus, the Incarnate God, and what He offers us through His Holy Spirit in the blessed Means of Grace.

Keynote presentations
The Catechism is Everything
The Catechism as Guide to Preaching and Hearing
The Catechism as Guide to Christian Prayer
The Catechism as Guide to the Sacramental Life
The Catechism as Beichtspiegel--Guide to Private Confession

Workshop/Discussion: Rethinking Sunday morning

Rethinking Sunday Morning: Better Questions, Bolder Experiments

For many, it's already happening. Whether Sunday morning finds them seated at work or at a coffee shop, in the bleachers or on a pew, they're already rethinking churchgoing. And perhaps you are, too.

But what is God up to in all of this? And to what more faithful future are Christian communities now being called? What are the practices of discipleship for a post-churchgoing world?

Join the conversation and discover the courage to ask some fresh questions and engage them more boldly.

Conference: The Great Commission Summitt

The Great Commission Summit exists to teach, equip and connect pastors and church leaders to be effective ministers of the Gospel amid the changing dynamic of global Christianity.

"To Christianize cannot be the same as to Westernize."  - Vitalino Simalox

Concordia University Irvine, guided by the Great Commission of Christ Jesus and the Lutheran Confessions, empowers students through the liberal arts and professional studies for lives of learning, service and leadership.

Dates June 9-10, 2016

All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation.  (2 Corinthians 5:18)
Paul tells us that God did two things to him.
First, God reconciled Paul to Himself through Christ,
and second, He gave Paul the ministry of reconciliation. What an incredible statement. We are reconciled to be reconcilers.

In our communities opportunities abound for reconciliation.
Person to person.
Church to community.
Church to church.
There are needs for reconciliation between races and classes.
Great Commission Summit 16 will focus on the two calls to reconciliation -
how those calls are being answered in the Global South -
and what God would have us do in our local callings.

Featured Presenter
Femi B. Adeleye has been involved in student ministry with the International Fellowship of Evangelical Students (IFES) for more than thirty years. He is now IFES Associate General Secretary for Partnership & Collaboration, working to nurture nationally led Christian student witness that will produce a new generation of leaders for the church and nations of Africa and beyond. Born in Nigeria, he is currently based in Ghana.

Conference: Keeping it real living the Jesus life in a secular world

Too often the gospel becomes abstract doctrines we’re supposed to believe instead of the living Lord Jesus himself, present in his Word. When that happens, then the Christian life becomes unreal as well. We’re left alone with the law as an ideal that we have to make real by our works. Christianity becomes mere talk that has no connection with reality at all.

This conference takes us back to the gospel of the Real Presence of the incarnate Jesus in Word and Sacrament, to give us his life to be our life. When we die with Christ by faith, we find ourselves in this world as it really is, fallen but his, preserved by him for redemption in Christ. Jesus gives us a real life to live in this world as the Body of Christ, to give ourselves away in love to our neighbors in our vocations and to bear witness to the world at large that it still is God’s world.

Presenters include Dr. Jonathan Sorum speaking on “Following Jesus: Bonhoeffer’s Recovery of the Reality of the Christian Life,” Dr. Robert Benne on “The Church’s Public Witness,” and Pastor Jaynan Egland as the Banquet Speaker for Saturday evening. Information on other speakers will be forthcoming.

Our event will take place immediately before the LCMC Annual Gathering in Dallas on October 4 – 7 and in the same hotel and conference center (Embassy Suites Hotel and Conference Center). We invite you to join us for this important conference. Keep watching our website for more information.

Place: Embassy Suites Hotel and Conference Center

Conference: Unearthing Gospel Gold - Crossings

Come, be strengthened in your ability to relate Scripture to life in a way that is relevant and joyful, using the Crossings Method. Beginners will have an opportunity to learn how to use this method, sometimes called the “Six-Step Method.” This is the method which is used in text studies which are e-published weekly by Crossings, available online at www.crossings.org.

We will explore together the implications of using a self-consciously law-gospel method for relating the Word of God to culture and life. Speakers, all of them members of the Crossings Community, will discuss how the Crossings Method has helped them. Pastors will talk about how they use it in their preaching, and lay people will tell what it means for them.

Conference sessions include:

  • Worship
  • “Unearthing Gospel Gold”
  • Using the Crossings Six-step method to reach a thorough hearing of a scriptural text
  • Crossing Contemporary Culture
  • Cartoons
  • Using the Six-Step Method for Preaching
  • “How I Learned to Trust the Crossings Method”

Date:  25 to 27 January 2015

The conference fee of $200 includes tuition, meals, and housing. Tuition is free for all seminary students and first-call pastors. 50% off for first-time attendees!

LIBERATE

LIBERATE is a new group of people committed to the message as defined by Jesus’ mission: “I have come to set the captives free” (Luke 4:18).
Through the demand of his law, God confronts and condemns people in their bondage and sin; through the declaration of his gospel, God comforts and forgives people with the liberating love of Jesus Christ. We want sufferers to hear these “two words” (law and gospel) so they can believe the promise that frees us from our past of guilt and shame; frees us from the present bondage of bitterness, insecurity, self-reliance, and fear; and frees us for the joy of worshiping God and serving our neighbor.
Our mission is to announce (and then announce again and again) this liberating word to a wounded and worn out world, hoping that the burdened and burnt out, the Christian and the non-Christian, will hear and rest in the freedom that Jesus came, died, and lives to give.

It was founded by Tullian Tchividjian, pastor of  is the senior pastor of Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, a Lecturer of Pastoral Theology at Knox Theological Seminary, a contributing editor to Leadership Journal, and the grandson of Evangelist Billy Graham.

They host an annual conference and offer resources including:

Five Two and the 2013 Five Two Wiki conference

FiveTwo is a “how to” network equipping sacramental church leaders to more effectively reach God’s lost people.

2013 Wiki 5 2 conference is September 24th to 26th in Katy Texas
WIKICONFERENCE is the annual gathering for the FiveTwo Network. You’ve probably heard the term “wiki” before… wikipedia, wiki leaks, etc. A “wiki” is a website that allows collaborated editing of it’s content and structure by it’s users. In our case, it’s a conference that is coordinated and presented through collaboration between organizations and ministry experts in various ministry fields. These people are on the front lines and in the trenches. They are passionate about reaching God’s lost in their communities and they are practicing what they are preaching. WIKICONFERENCE is for any church leader–staff or volunteer–who wants personal, practical ways to better reach the lost in their community.

Conference: Australian Conference on Lutheran Education

Australian College on Lutheran Education
Wise Up! - Transforming Mind, Body and Heart in Lutheran Education
30th September to 2nd October 2013
Brisbane

Approximately every four years Lutheran Education Australia and the respective regions organise a major conference to celebrate Lutheran Education in Australia.  This conference is named ACLE, Australian Conference on Lutheran Education.  The 2013 conference will be held in Brisbane on the 30th September to 2nd October 2013.  The ACLE4 conference theme is Wise Up!  Transforming Mind, Body and Heart in Lutheran Education.

The theme takes up the work of the Lutheran church and its schools in providing the wisdom of God for the development of the whole of life for young people.  Education in a Lutheran school is a transformational activity that engages all aspects of the human experience.  The getting of this wisdom requires forward thinking, to address how the traditions passed onto us may be reformed into new ways of engaging learners.

During the conference there will be presentations and opprtunities to collaborate with expert contemporary thinkers as well as participate in numerous fellowship activities with like-minded professionals across Lutheran Schools in Australia and other countries.  Most of the conference will be held in the state-of-the-art Brisbane Convention Centre in one of Australia's beautiful cities, Brisbane.
